Benny Adams

Born in Fort Smith, Benny Adams Sr. is the son of Norma Jean Adams and the brother of Derrick Adams. At a very young age, Benny’s family relocated to Tullahassee, the community that would forever become the center of his life and legacy. His family once resided on Redus Street in Tullahassee, where he grew up surrounded by the values of hard work, community pride, and perseverance.

Benny attended Carter G. Woodson School, where he quickly became known as a phenomenal basketball player. On the court, he earned the nickname “FLEX,” a name that reflected both his athletic talent and commanding presence during his playing days. His love for his school and community was unmatched, and the memories created during his years at Carter G. Woodson remained close to his heart throughout his life.

After graduating, Benny chose to remain in Tullahassee because of the deep love he had for his hometown and its people. His commitment to the town went far beyond words. For several years, he faithfully served as Mayor of Tullahassee, fighting tirelessly to preserve the town’s future and ensure that its rich history and community spirit would continue for generations to come.

Benny’s dedication could be seen in every corner of the community. For decades, he personally maintained city property, cutting acres upon acres of grass with his own lawn mower and carefully weed eating street corners to help keep Tullahassee beautiful. His work was never about recognition—it was about pride, service, and love for the place he called home.

Known affectionately throughout the community as the “Tullahassee Ambassador,” Benny has spent years documenting the town’s history and preserving its memories. Through countless school homecomings, reunions, community gatherings, photographs, and videos, he has captured the spirit of Tullahassee in a way few others could. His collection of thousands of pictures and videos serves as a priceless archive of the people, traditions, and legacy of Carter G. Woodson and the Tullahassee community.
